Chennai is one of South India's biggest stainless steel hubs, and most of the trade is concentrated in a few streets around George Town and Kondithope. If you're a fabricator, manufacturer or MSME buying here, a little know-how saves you money and rework.
The George Town / Kondithope cluster
Wall Tax Road, Kondithope and the surrounding lanes hold a dense cluster of stainless steel stockists and processors. Being in the cluster means quick access to stock across grades and forms, same- or next-day dispatch, and cut-to-size processing — handy when you need a single sheet rather than a full lot.
What to check before you pay
- Mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) — proves the grade and chemistry, traceable to the heat number.
- Per-kg pricing — the rate should be ₹/kg with GST shown separately; nickel-linked, so confirm a firm price at order.
- Correct grade — ask for the certificate and, for critical jobs, a PMI/spot test. Don't accept 202 sold as 304.
- No inflated minimum — a good stockist cuts to size and quotes a single sheet as fairly as a bulk order.
- Open weighing — you pay for the actual weight on the scale.
Grades and forms commonly stocked
Expect 201, 202, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 409, 430, 310S and Duplex 2205 — in coils, sheets, plates, strips, pipes & tubes, bars, angles/flats/channels, wire, circles, fittings & flanges, chequered plate and decorative/PVD sheet. Finishes run from 2B mill to BA, No.4 brushed, hairline, No.8 mirror and PVD colours.
Authorized mill material
For genuine mill-grade material with full documentation, buy from an authorized distributor of established mills — Jindal Stainless (India's largest stainless producer) and SAIL's Salem Steel Plant (Tamil Nadu's own stainless mill). It's the simplest assurance you're getting what you paid for.
Delivery across South India
A Chennai base also means easy supply across the region — Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, including Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Kochi and Vijayawada. Send your grade, finish, dimensions and quantity and you should get availability, a lead time and a firm ₹/kg price within a business day.
